My Sweet Tooth!! – How do I overcome it?

February 7th, 2011

Everybody at some point of time has cravings for sweet foods. These sugar cravings happen because of the low functioning adrenal glands which are above the kidneys. One of the fundamental reason for the cravings is stress. When you are under tremendous stress adrenaline is secreted, thus causing the craving for sugar. Excessive adrenaline can reduce the body’s energy reserves.

During such times, doctors could prescribe a dosage of adrenal supplements. This will help the patients to regain their energies and thus will be in better control to take control of their diet in order to control the sugar intake.

Need for water i.e. thirstiness can sometimes be interpreted with need for sugar. Thus identifying such situations and taking sufficient water at these times helps to replenish the body. Also increasing the intake of protein rich food can lead to reduction in the craving. Food items that contain beans can help.

Nap your way back to Power with Power Naps

February 4th, 2011

Have you ever allowed yourself to doze off that 5 – 10 minutes  during your busy day? How did it feel? Don’t you feel absolutely refreshed and you feel on top of the world !!! Well that’s what power naps are, they can even last upto 30 minutes.

It is found that these power naps help in improve your memory and in reducing the stress levels. In recent times most of the work in the IT/ITES jobs are confined within a cubicle, sitting on the same position without much physical activity. However the stress that the human brain goes through is quite tremendous. These small sleeps help rejuvenate oneself, it is just like re-booting the computer.

If the power nap exceeds 30 minutes, you get into a deep sleep mode and waking up leaves you feeling totally miserable.

Thus one should be careful about the duration of the nap and wake up cautiously.

Antioxidants Uncovered

August 9th, 2010

Oprah and probably your doctor swear by them. Antioxidant foods are taking over—as they very well should be. To clarify, antioxidants are the collective term for the vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and polyphenols that protect your body. Some of the best-known antioxidants are vitamins A (found in daily and fish), C (found in citrus fruits), E (found in seeds, oils and nuts) and the mineral selenium (found in meats and plant foods).

Antioxidants basically help prevent disease because they protect your body from free radicals (radicals are believed to be involved in degenerative diseases and cancers). So now that you know what antioxidants are and how they can greatly and vastly improve and protect your health, I’m sure you want to know which types of food are high in antioxidants.

Fruits—basically all your berries (blueberry, strawberry, blackberry) are all high in antioxidants. Try eating a cup of plain yogurt with some fresh berries on top each day to incorporate them into your diet.

Vegetables—no meal is complete with vegetables. Leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale are high in antioxidants as well as peppers, cabbage, artichokes and brussels sprouts.

Nuts and seeds—pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts and sunflower seeds all tossed together make a great high antioxidant trail mix

Legumes—broad beans, pinto beans, and soybeans are filling, easy to prepare and healthy.

Cereals—barley, millet, oats and corn are easy to find and high in antioxidants

Don’t be afraid to mix these foods together. Combine oats, nuts and seeds with some fresh berries for new breakfast ideas. Or try make a soup with different legumes and vegetables for a Fall time favorite.

How Do I Talk to My Doctor?

February 23rd, 2010

Nobody can help you achieve and maintain good health like your doctor. Unlike a website or a textbook, your doctor possesses more than just medical knowledge, as he or she also has knowledge about you. Moreover, your doctor is there to answer your questions about healthy living, medical conditions, and more.

That being said, none of this has any use unless you know how to talk to your doctor. Here are a few tips to help foster communication on both sides:

Don’t settle. Just because your insurance plan set you up with a specific doctor doesn’t mean that this person is the right practitioner for you. If you’d feel more comfortable with a doctor of a different gender or age—or if you just aren’t feeling a connection with this particular person—don’t be afraid to make a change.

Write things down. People tend to think of all sorts of questions and symptoms to report in the days leading up to a doctor’s appointment, only to forget these items in the moment. To avoid this problem, bring a written list of all your questions, symptoms, and concerns. You can even write down your medications and allergies if you need help remembering them.

Explore your options. Sometimes doctors are quick to recommend the most popular prescription or treatment method, but this might not be right for you. Inquire about any alternative medications or treatments and the possible side effects of each.

When in doubt, speak up. You might not think your stomach ache or dizziness is relevant to the condition you’re discussing, but let’s be honest — you didn’t go to med school. Tell your doctor everything. And while you’re at it, remind him or her of everything, especially your allergies, prescriptions, and current or previous conditions.
